While it is summer in Brazil and Europe, Chile fills up with skiers looking for snow. More than 404,000 foreign visitors are projected for July, with Valle Nevado, Portillo and La Parva as the main draws.
While it is beach season in the northern hemisphere and across much of South America, in Chile the mountains are covered in snow and the ski resorts are at their busiest. And that snow does not only attract Chileans: every winter, thousands of foreign tourists arrive looking for exactly what their own countries cannot offer at this time of year.
A season driven by foreign visitors
Projections for July point to more than 404,000 foreign tourists in Chile, with a strong presence from two markets: Brazil, which accounts for most of the flow with around 349,500 visitors, and Europe, with some 97,000. Resorts such as Valle Nevado, Portillo and La Parva take much of that demand, consolidating themselves as international-level snow destinations a few hours from Santiago.
For Marcelo Rollandi, founder of Vivencias Travel, the trend is not new but it is sustained: "Year after year we have seen consistent growth in tourist arrivals, especially from Brazil."
Not only snow: a complete experience
The appeal, according to Rollandi, goes beyond the slopes. "Foreign visitors want to experience Chile fully. Beyond the snow, they are looking for local food," he explains. The trip combines skiing with food, wine and culture, something operators have learned to build into their programmes.
There are also clear differences depending on where the tourist comes from. "Brazilian tourists tend to prioritise the social side; Europeans value the technical side of skiing more," says the founder of Vivencias Travel — a distinction that shapes how services are designed for each group.
Competing with Argentina
Chile is not alone in the contest for snow tourism. On the other side of the mountains, Argentina competes with well-established destinations. For Rollandi, the key is the difference in offer: "Argentina remains a serious competitor; Chile has to stand out on quality, safety and connectivity."
With the season in full swing, the sector is optimistic. "We expect to close this season with figures similar to or better than previous years," Rollandi projects.
